Reading the Google Ads PMax Insights and Asset Reports
How to interpret Performance Max's Insights tab and asset performance ratings to make real optimization decisions, not guesses.

Why PMax reporting feels unfamiliar at first
Merchants coming from a standard Search or Shopping campaign background often open a Performance Max campaign's reporting expecting the same keyword-level or search-term detail and find it isn't there. That's by design — PMax pools inventory across Search, Shopping, Display, YouTube, Discover, Gmail, and Maps, and Google doesn't expose the same granular query data across all of those surfaces the way it does for standard Search. Instead, PMax gives you two main reporting surfaces worth understanding deeply: the Insights tab and the asset group's performance ratings, both accessible from the campaign's left-hand navigation.
The Insights tab's search categories report
Inside a PMax campaign, click Insights (or 'Insights and reports' depending on account version) to find the search categories section, which groups the queries your ads matched into broader themes with associated impression and conversion volume. This is the closest equivalent to a Search terms report that PMax offers. Use it to check whether the categories being matched actually align with your product catalog — a mismatch here (irrelevant categories showing meaningful spend) is your clearest signal that search themes or product feed data need tightening.
Reading trending categories and demand shifts
The Insights tab also surfaces trending search categories and terms with rising interest relative to recent history, which can be a genuinely useful early signal for demand shifts in your category — a spike in interest around a specific product attribute or use case that you could reflect in updated ad copy, search themes, or even seasonal stock decisions. Treat this as directional market intelligence rather than actionable targeting data, since you can't target these terms directly; you can only respond by adjusting assets, feed content, or inventory.
Asset group performance ratings explained
Inside an asset group, individual assets (headlines, descriptions, images, logos) each receive a performance rating of Low, Good, Best, or 'Learning' if there isn't yet enough data, visible on the asset group's main editing screen. These ratings are relative to other assets within the same asset group, not an absolute quality score — a 'Low' rated headline isn't necessarily bad copy, it's underperforming relative to the other headlines competing for the same combinations within that specific asset group.
Acting on Low-rated assets correctly
The instinct when seeing a 'Low' rated asset is to delete it immediately, but Google's documentation suggests waiting until the asset group has enough combined impression volume for ratings to stabilize, generally at least a couple of weeks of active serving, before making changes. If a 'Low' rating persists after that stabilization window, replace it with a genuinely different value proposition or image angle rather than a minor rewording — the combinatorial testing PMax runs benefits more from meaningfully distinct options than near-duplicate variations of the same message.
The asset group-level overview metrics
Each asset group also reports its own impressions, clicks, cost, and conversions independent of the individual asset ratings, viewable by selecting the asset group from the campaign's Asset groups tab. Compare performance across asset groups within the same campaign to identify which product categories are carrying the campaign's results and which are underperforming — this is especially useful for catalogs with multiple asset groups split by product line, since it reveals category-level performance that the campaign-level summary metrics would otherwise average away.
Using the 'why this asset group' diagnostics
For asset groups that appear to be getting little to no impression volume relative to others, check the asset group's status indicators for any policy or approval issues shown directly next to the asset group name. A surprisingly common cause is a disapproved image asset (violating an unstated aspect ratio or text-overlay guideline) quietly limiting how many combinations can actually serve, which reduces overall delivery even though the campaign-level status shows as broadly 'Eligible'.
Cross-referencing with Merchant Center performance data
For PMax campaigns pulling from a Shopify product feed via Merchant Center, the 'Best sellers' and 'Price competitiveness' reports inside Merchant Center's Growth section provide complementary insight that PMax's own reporting won't surface directly — specifically whether your pricing is competitive relative to similar products showing for the same searches, and which products are trending in demand broadly across Google Shopping regardless of your own campaign's current spend on them. A product showing strong 'Best sellers' momentum but weak conversion in your own PMax asset group is worth a pricing or feed-content review.
The 'Impression share' and lost impression share metrics
PMax campaigns show Search impression share and the associated lost impression share due to budget or rank, accessible as columns you can add to the campaign view (click the columns icon and search 'impr. share'). A high lost impression share due to budget suggests the campaign could spend more profitably if budget were increased, while lost impression share due to rank points to bid strategy or asset quality issues limiting how competitively the campaign is bidding, independent of budget constraints.
Interpreting conversion value and ROAS trends over time
Rather than reading a single snapshot, set the date range comparison tool (top right of the campaign view) to compare the current period against the prior equivalent period, checking conversion value and ROAS trend direction rather than just an absolute number. A campaign with a stable or improving ROAS trend over the past 30 days, even if not yet hitting a specific target, is behaving very differently from one trending downward — and that trajectory should influence whether you extend patience or intervene.
When asset group segmentation itself is the problem
If Insights and asset performance data consistently show one broad asset group underperforming across the board despite reasonable individual asset ratings, the underlying issue may be that too many unrelated products are grouped into a single asset group, diluting the search theme and creative signal. Splitting a broad 'All products' asset group into category-specific ones — each with its own tailored search themes, headlines, and images — often resolves this more effectively than continuing to tweak individual assets within an overly broad group.
Turning reports into a repeatable review cadence
A workable monthly routine: check the Insights tab's search categories for anything irrelevant or newly trending (10-15 minutes), review each asset group's individual asset ratings and refresh any persistently Low-rated assets (15-20 minutes per asset group), check impression share lost to budget versus rank to inform budget decisions (5 minutes), and cross-reference Merchant Center's Best sellers and Price competitiveness reports for any pricing-driven underperformance (10 minutes). This keeps PMax optimization grounded in the actual reporting Google provides rather than guesswork.
Where automated optimization complements manual review

The asset-level and search-category review described here is still worth doing manually and periodically, since it involves judgment calls about creative direction, feed content, and asset group structure that go beyond what any automated bidding layer is evaluating in its optimization cycle.
