Titles are matched to search queries, not read like ad copy

Google's algorithm matches Shopping ad titles against search query text far more literally than most merchants expect. A title written for branding — 'The Everyday Tote' — will rarely surface for a query like 'black leather tote bag women's,' while a title containing those exact descriptive terms will. The Shopify Title field (Products > [product] > Title) feeds directly into the Shopping title attribute unless your feed app overrides it, so the words you choose there are effectively your keyword targeting for free and paid Shopping placements.

The general formula

A reliable structure across most categories is: Brand + Product Type + Key Attribute(s) + Material/Color + Size, ordered so the most search-relevant terms appear first, since Google truncates titles in some placements. For example, 'Adidas Ultraboost Running Shoes Men's Black Size 10' front-loads brand and product type before less commonly searched attributes like size. Avoid burying the product type at the end — 'Black Size 10 Adidas Running Shoes Ultraboost' matches fewer real queries even though it contains the same words.

Apparel titles

For apparel, prioritize Brand + Gender/Age Group + Product Type + Color + Material, and let size live in the variant rather than cramming every size into the title (Google pulls the specific variant's size attribute separately if you've mapped it correctly from Shopify's Size option). Example: 'Levi's Women's 501 Original Jeans Straight Blue Denim.' Skip promotional language like 'Sale' or 'New Arrival' in the title — Google's policies discourage this and it doesn't match search intent anyway.

Home goods and furniture titles

Home goods benefit from leading with product type since brand recognition is weaker in this category: 'Ceramic Table Lamp White 24 Inch' outperforms 'Acme Home Ceramic Table Lamp' for most searchers who don't know or care about the brand. Include dimensions or capacity when relevant (e.g., '6-Quart Slow Cooker Stainless Steel') since these are common qualifying terms shoppers add to narrow results.

Beauty and consumables titles

Beauty and consumable products should lead with Brand + Product Line + Product Type + Size/Volume, since brand and specific product-line loyalty drive a large share of search volume in this category: 'CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser 16 oz.' Include the volume or count explicitly, since many searches include quantity qualifiers like '2 pack' or 'travel size.'

Bulk-editing titles in Shopify

For catalogs where titles need a structural overhaul, Shopify's bulk editor (Products > select products > Edit products) lets you edit titles inline for a subset of the catalog, but pattern-based rewrites across hundreds of SKUs are usually faster with a CSV export, a spreadsheet formula that concatenates Vendor + Product Type + relevant option values into a new title column, then a re-import matched by Handle.

Avoid duplicate titles across variants

If item_group_id is used to group variants under one parent, avoid making every variant title identical when they differ meaningfully (e.g., different colors), since Google shows individual variant titles in the ad when a shopper filters by size or color. A title that's identical across 12 color variants makes it harder for a shopper to tell which listing corresponds to the color they searched for.

Frequently asked questions

Should I put my brand name first in every title?

Only in categories where brand drives search volume, like apparel or beauty. For commodity home goods, product type first often performs better.

Does title length matter?

Google allows up to 150 characters but can truncate titles in certain placements, so put the most important terms early.

Can I automate title formulas across my catalog?

Yes, via a CSV export/import with a formula-based title column, or via feed app rules that concatenate Shopify fields into a template.
