Instagram vs Facebook Placements for Ecommerce Products
How Instagram and Facebook placements perform differently for Shopify product ads, and when to separate or combine them.

Same auction, different audiences
Instagram and Facebook run through the same Meta ad auction and can be selected together under Advantage+ placements, but the underlying user behavior on each surface differs meaningfully. Instagram skews toward a visually driven, often younger and more mobile-native audience browsing Feed, Stories and Reels with high scroll speed. Facebook's audience skews slightly older, spends more time in Feed and groups, and often has longer session behavior, which affects how much time a static product image or video has to earn attention.
What Advantage+ placements does by default
When you select Advantage+ placements (Meta's default and recommended setting) in Ads Manager, the system automatically distributes your budget across Facebook, Instagram, Audience Network and Messenger based on where it predicts the best results for your optimization event, using your actual account's data rather than platform-wide assumptions. For most Shopify merchants this outperforms manual placement selection, because the algorithm can shift budget in real time as relative performance changes, which a manually fixed placement selection cannot do.
When manual placement control makes sense
Manual placement selection is worth considering when you have a product category with a clearly established platform bias from your own data (e.g., a visually distinctive product line that consistently performs on Instagram Reels but underperforms in Audience Network's lower-quality inventory), or when brand safety concerns make Audience Network placements (which can include third-party apps and websites) unsuitable for your product category.
Reading placement-level performance data
In Ads Manager, use the Breakdown menu (By Delivery > Placement) on a running campaign to see cost per purchase and ROAS by individual placement — Facebook Feed, Instagram Feed, Instagram Stories, Instagram Reels, Facebook Reels, and others are all reported separately even within a single Advantage+ placements ad set. This is the correct way to learn your account's real placement bias rather than assuming based on general industry commentary.
Creative format requirements differ
Instagram Stories and Reels require vertical 9:16 creative to avoid letterboxing and look native to the format; a horizontal or square product video repurposed without a vertical crop will underperform there regardless of targeting. Facebook Feed and Instagram Feed both accommodate square (1:1) or 4:5 formats well. If you're running Advantage+ placements, upload multiple aspect ratio versions of your creative in the ad's Media section so Meta can serve the right crop to each placement rather than stretching a single format everywhere.
A worked placement comparison
Consider a Shopify home goods store running one Advantage+ placements ad set at $80/day for two weeks. The placement breakdown might show Instagram Feed at a $34 cost per purchase driving 40% of purchases, Facebook Feed at $41 cost per purchase driving 30% of purchases, Instagram Reels at $52 cost per purchase driving 20%, and Audience Network at $95 cost per purchase driving the remaining 10%. This doesn't mean cut Audience Network entirely — Meta's system is already allocating less budget there because it's less efficient — but it does tell you where creative refresh effort is best spent first.
Stories and Reels ad specs
For Instagram Stories and Reels ads, Meta recommends keeping key text and product information within the safe zone (roughly the middle 80% of the vertical frame, per Meta's ad specifications) so it isn't obscured by the platform's own UI elements like the profile icon, caption area or swipe-up prompts. Product ads that ignore this and place pricing text near the edges frequently see it cropped or hidden on certain devices.
Shopping tags and Instagram-specific features
Instagram supports native product tagging on organic posts and Reels linked to your Shopify catalog through the Meta commerce integration, which is separate from paid ad placements but complements them — a well-tagged organic post that performs well organically is a strong signal for which creative concepts to turn into paid ads. Facebook's Shop tab similarly surfaces catalog products, though with generally lower organic browsing traffic than Instagram's Shop tab for most Shopify categories.
Audience Network and Messenger placements
Audience Network extends your ads to third-party apps and websites outside Meta's own platforms, and Messenger placements show ads within Messenger inbox and Stories. For ecommerce, these generally deliver lower-cost but often lower-intent traffic; Meta's algorithm typically allocates them a smaller share of budget automatically for purchase-optimized campaigns. Excluding them manually is rarely necessary since the system already deprioritizes underperforming placements, but if you see consistently poor Audience Network ROAS across multiple campaigns, use Placements > Edit Placements to exclude it manually.
Attribution nuances by placement
Meta's default attribution window (7-day click, 1-day view as of current Ads Manager defaults, adjustable under Attribution Settings) applies across placements, but view-through attribution matters more on placements like Reels and Stories where users scroll past quickly without clicking yet may convert later after recalling the product. Don't judge a Reels-heavy ad set purely on click-through purchases; check the view-through attributed conversions in the breakdown before concluding it underperforms.
Testing placement-specific creative
For a Shopify store with a clear best-selling hero product, it's worth producing at least one dedicated vertical video cut specifically for Reels/Stories (fast-paced, native-feeling, first 2 seconds critical since Reels users scroll fast) separate from the static image or slower carousel format that performs better in Feed placements. Running both within one Advantage+ placements ad set lets Meta's system match the right creative to the right placement automatically.
Seasonal and category shifts
Placement performance isn't static — categories like fashion and beauty often see stronger Instagram Reels performance during high-engagement seasonal periods (back-to-school, holiday gifting) when video browsing spikes, while Facebook Feed can hold steadier performance for higher-consideration purchases like home goods or electronics where users research more before buying. Re-check your placement breakdown quarterly rather than assuming a pattern from six months ago still holds.
The practical recommendation
For the large majority of Shopify merchants, especially smaller accounts without dedicated video production resources, defaulting to Advantage+ placements with multiple aspect-ratio creative variants uploaded is the highest-leverage setup. Manual placement restriction should be reserved for specific, data-backed reasons — brand safety on Audience Network, or a clearly proven platform bias from your own placement breakdown data — rather than a default starting choice.
