How to Set Up the Meta Pixel on Shopify (2026 Guide)

Step-by-step guide to installing the Meta Pixel on Shopify in 2026 — Conversions API, catalog sync, event testing, and common errors fixed.

The Meta Pixel is the single most important piece of tracking infrastructure for any Shopify store running Facebook or Instagram ads. Without it, Meta's algorithm has no idea which visitors converted — so Advantage+ Shopping, retargeting audiences, and lookalikes all underperform. Here's exactly how to install it on Shopify in 2026, including the Conversions API (CAPI) which is now required for iOS 17+ tracking.

What the Meta Pixel does

The Meta Pixel is a small piece of JavaScript that fires on your Shopify store and sends events (PageView, ViewContent, AddToCart, InitiateCheckout, Purchase) to Meta. Meta uses these events to train its algorithm on who buys from you, so it can find more of those people in the Facebook and Instagram auctions.

Step 1: Create a Meta Business account

Go to business.facebook.com and create a Business Manager. Inside Business Manager, open Events Manager and click Connect Data Sources → Web → Pixel. Give the pixel a name (e.g. 'MyStore Pixel') and enter your Shopify store URL.

Step 2: Copy your Pixel ID

Meta will give you a 15-16 digit Pixel ID. Copy it. You'll paste it into Shopify in the next step.

Step 3: Install the Facebook & Instagram sales channel in Shopify

In your Shopify admin, go to Settings → Apps and sales channels → Shopify App Store, search 'Facebook & Instagram', and install it. Connect the sales channel to your Meta Business account, then paste the Pixel ID when prompted. Shopify will inject the pixel into every page of your storefront automatically — no theme editing required.

Step 4: Enable the Conversions API (CAPI)

iOS 17+ blocks a large share of browser-side pixel events. The Conversions API sends the same events server-side from Shopify to Meta, restoring most of the lost signal. Inside the Facebook & Instagram sales channel, toggle 'Send events via Conversions API' to ON. Shopify handles the server-side integration automatically.

Step 5: Verify with Event Manager Test Events

In Meta Events Manager, click your Pixel → Test Events. Open your Shopify store in a new tab and trigger events: view a product (should fire ViewContent), add to cart (AddToCart), start checkout (InitiateCheckout), complete a test order (Purchase). Each event should appear in Test Events within 30 seconds. If not, check that ad blockers are off and cookies are enabled.

Step 6: Set up the Product Catalog

For Advantage+ Shopping and dynamic product ads, you also need a Product Catalog. The Shopify Facebook & Instagram channel auto-syncs your entire product catalog to Meta Commerce Manager, including inventory, prices, and variants. Confirm sync in Commerce Manager → Catalog.

Common errors and fixes

Pixel not firing: theme conflict — remove any old pixel code from theme.liquid. Duplicate events: you likely have two pixels installed (one in theme, one via sales channel) — keep only the sales-channel install. Purchase events missing on iOS: enable the Conversions API (Step 4). Low match rate: enable Advanced Matching in the sales channel — Shopify will send hashed email/phone with each event.

Meta Pixel vs Google Tag: which comes first?

Install both. The Meta Pixel powers Facebook and Instagram ads; Google Tag powers Google Ads and Google Shopping. Neither replaces the other. Adsify auto-configures both during install so your Shopify store starts collecting first-party data for both ad platforms from day one — including Conversions API and Google Enhanced Conversions.

Skip the manual setup: let Adsify handle it

Adsify installs the Meta Pixel, enables Conversions API, syncs your product catalog to Meta Commerce Manager, sets up event testing, and configures Advanced Matching automatically — all during the first 60 seconds after install. If you're already running Facebook/Instagram ads, Adsify also audits your existing pixel for missing events and duplicates.
