Create and verify your Merchant Center account

Start at merchants.google.com and sign in with the Google account you'll use to manage ads long-term — switching owners later means re-verifying domain ownership. During setup you'll choose a business country and enter your store URL. Google requires you to verify and claim the URL before you can submit products; the fastest method for Shopify stores is the HTML tag option, since Shopify lets you paste a meta tag directly into Online Store > Preferences > Google verification, or you can use the Google & YouTube sales channel app which handles verification automatically when you connect your store.

Connect Shopify via the Google & YouTube channel

In Shopify admin, go to Settings > Apps and sales channels > add the 'Google & YouTube' channel. During setup it asks you to link or create a Merchant Center account, then walks through business information, shipping, and tax settings. This channel automatically builds a product feed from your Shopify catalog and keeps it synced — you don't need to manually create a feed file. If you're using a separate feed management app instead (which many merchants do for more control over titles and categories), you'd instead generate a feed URL from that app and register it manually in Merchant Center under Products > Feeds > add a primary feed.

Configure shipping settings

Under Settings > Shipping and returns in Merchant Center, set up shipping rates that match what customers actually see at your Shopify checkout. You can enter flat rates, or reference rates already configured in Shopify Settings > Shipping and delivery. Mismatched shipping costs between your feed's implied shipping and your actual checkout are a common cause of shopper complaints and can trigger account-level review, so keep these in sync whenever you change checkout shipping rules.

Configure returns settings

Under the same Shipping and returns section, add a Return policy — either paste your Shopify refund policy page URL (Settings > Policies > Refund policy) or enter the return window and conditions manually. Google requires this before Shopping ads or free listings go live, and it's one of the most commonly skipped steps because it doesn't block the initial account creation flow.

Enable tax settings (US merchants)

US-based merchants need to configure tax under Settings > Tax and shipping, either by specifying a flat rate per state or by enabling automatic tax calculation using Shopify's own tax settings as the source. Get this wrong and shoppers see an unexpected total at checkout relative to what appeared in the Shopping listing, which is a policy violation Google actively monitors.

Submit your first feed and check Diagnostics

Once connected, go to Products > All products to confirm your catalog populated, then check Products > Diagnostics after the first crawl (usually within 24–48 hours) for any item-level or account-level issues. Don't launch Shopping campaigns until Diagnostics shows an active, mostly-approved feed — running ads against a feed still full of disapproved items wastes budget on the small share of eligible listings while the rest sit invisible.

Link Merchant Center to Google Ads

In Merchant Center, go to Settings > Linked accounts > Google Ads, enter your Google Ads customer ID, and approve the link from the Google Ads side under Tools > Linked accounts. This link is what lets you build Performance Max or standard Shopping campaigns pulling from your product feed — without it, no campaign type that uses product data will have anything to show.

Where automation fits after setup

Once Merchant Center and Google Ads are linked, tools like Adsify can launch Performance Max campaigns directly from your synced Shopify catalog and keep optimizing bids and budgets on a recurring schedule, but the underlying feed quality from the setup steps above still determines how many of your products are even eligible to appear.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a separate feed file if I use the Google & YouTube app?

No — the app builds and syncs the feed from your Shopify catalog automatically.

How long until my products appear after first connecting?

Typically 24–48 hours for the initial crawl, though full processing of a large catalog can take longer.

Can I use Shopify's shipping rates directly in Merchant Center?

You can manually replicate them, or use automatic tax/shipping settings that reference your Shopify checkout configuration.
